It is perfectly appropriate and in accordance with our grammar. In other words, the reduction is not lazy. It's hard to downgrade from schwa, so when the suffix is added the vowel sound is essentially deleted, like in camera and chocolate. It's a schwa, which is a perfectly legitimate vowel sound. Comfort already involves a reduction in the last 'o' for most American English speakers-meaning, it sounds like comfert. The more a vowel is reduced (due to stress on a new syllable), the fewer syllables it will feel like the word has. This is an ordinary grammatical phenomenon of American English, and it's no more incorrect than changing the pronunciation of the root word 'athlete' when it becomes 'athletic'. It's also pretty complex, so if you want more information, the Wikipedia page is here.
Usually when the pronunciation of an unstressed syllable changes, it's caused by "vowel reduction." It is extraordinarily common.
